Telling
A story to Sell Your Soap
Do you tell a story when you are marketing your handmade
soap? Do you let your customers know about all of the wonderful
ingredients that are part of the make-up of your amazing handmade
products? All of the natural oils, essential oils, olive
oil, shea butter, and of the rich blends that are so good for your
skin. If not you are definitely missing out on one of the exceptional
selling points of your products. Customers don't just want to buy
a beauty product, they want to by a story, a solution and exclusivity.
Look at this wonderful handmade soap that I found that has all of
these wonderful attributes and really help my skin irritation. This
is the thought process of a repeat customer. This are the very type
of customer that you covet so much.
Are you providing your handmade soap products at wholesale
prices to your customers. Is this a story they can repeat to their
friends? We use the finest imported olive oil in our soap, do you?
Are your lotions made of the same natural ingredients? Do
you make a herbal soap?
Some customers might demand organic beauty products. Are you willing
to make such an exclusive item? In you local community will the
market support the higher end products? Is this a market your should
target? I wonder if any of these questions have crossed your mind.
They will definitely determine whether or not you you handmade beauty
business will succeed or not. There are different stories that need
to be told to different customers. Maybe one customer's biggest
concern is environmentally friendly products, if so then
this should be your pitch to them. Another might be more concerned
with active ingredients in your natural product. having all
of this story telling material ready and available will help you
make the sale every time.
Your fragrances should tell
their own story and always the best selling attribute of handmade
products. Be sure to keep some popular scents in your line.
Personally I hate the smell of lavender, but I keep it in my line
because I get so many customers asking for it. Your business is
about customers, not about your personal tastes. Many a handmade
soap business has folded because the crafter was too attached
to their own personal preferences. Be familiar with the stories
behind each fragrance. Also, always keep a wholesale
soap price sheet to give to legitimate retailers. Pure
and natural soap products produce a nice premium mark-up for
retailers, be sure they understand this.
